Regional Overview
Visiting Australia? Discover our main wine states and regions
Australian wine regions
Australia is a large country - Margaret River is further from the Hunter Valley than Jerez in Spain is from Tokaji in Hungary - so, despite the distinctive national approach to wine, Australian wines are not all the same. The wines of Margaret River and of the Hunter Valley differ as much as sherry and tokay do. The three most important wine-producing states are South Australia, Victoria and New South Wales. As well as bulk production, they each have specific premium wine regions.

Dr Philip Norrie was born in Sydney, Australia in 1953. He attended Knox Grammar School and graduated from the University of New South Wales Medical School in 1977. He has an established family/general practice surgery in Sydney's famous Northern Beaches region.
Dr Norrie has a keen interest in medical history, especially as it relates to man's oldest medicine, wine. His writing includes 'Australia's Wine Doctors', an account of Australian doctors who have established vineyards, three histories; 'Dr Lindeman' (1993), 'The Penfold Wine Group' (1994) and 'Leo Buring' (1996), an account of the early wine industry in and around Sydney 'Vineyards of Sydney' (1990), and 'Dr Philip Norrie's Advice on Wine and Health - Thinking & Drinking Health'. He also annually publishes a wine and health-themed diary.
He holds two Masters degrees, one in Science and one in Social Science and is currently completing research into the history of wine as a medicine for his Doctorate of Philosophy.
Dr Norrie wrote the wine and health segments for 'The Oxford Companion to Wine', edited by Jancis Robinson MW, and contributes regularly to a number of wine-related magazines.
In 1986, together with his wife Belinda, Dr Norrie founded the boutique 50-acre vineyard, Pendarves Estate, from 75 acres of bush at Belford in the Lower Hunter Valley. Pendarves Estate is situated on the unique Belford Dome of Limestone, which gives excellent quality fruit, so much so that after the third vintage in 1993, Pendarves Estate was the Most Successful Exhibitor for the current vintage at the Hunter Small Winemakers Wine Show and has since accrued numerous other awards. White wine styles made include Semillon, Verdelho, Chardonnay and a Sauvignon Blanc-Semillon blend. Red wine styles are Pinot Noir, Chambourcin, Shiraz and a Merlot-Malbec-Cabernet blend.
